Project & Programme Recovery

Project & Programme Recovery

Programme and Project recovery encompasses the planning, assessment and of troubled projects that are in danger of delivering on their benefits. The assessment report will highlight whether the project should be recovered or terminated. In our experience, most organisations do not have a methodology to recover troubled programmes and projects.

Our research on project failure conducted in the South African environment concluded that more than:

50% of projects fail

10% of projects are terminated

40% of projects are implemented, although some do not fully realise the benefitsPM Academy has the programme and project management professionals to provide and objective external assessment, reporting and recovery of your programmes and projects. We follow our 7 step PPRecovery methodology below for recovery.

Confirm Scope and Sign Contract : We confirm and finalise the Programme and Project Recovery Scope, the execution approach, project structure, reporting requirements and timelines for the assessment. Project Delivery contracts are prepared and signed by both parties.

Recovery Planning : A Project Charter / Project Initiation Document is produced detailing the scope of the contract. Assessment can either be based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) or PRINCE2®. An assessment plan is articulated and all documentation is signed-off by the client and PM Academy.

Conduct Assessment : Based on our 5 step PPINSIGHT methodology the programme or project is assessed. The programme or project documentation is assessed and interviews with key stakeholders are conducted to establish an “AS-IS” and compared to the desired outputs, outcomes and benefits of the programme or project.

Compile Draft Report : We compile a draft report and recommendations to either recover or terminate the programme or project. The draft report includes an implementation / termination plan and a prioritised list of actions to recover the programme or project.

Agree Draft Report : The draft Programme or Project Assessment report is presented, discussed and agreed with management to confirm relevance, accuracy and ensure buy-it on the recovery activities or termination recommendation.

Implement Plan : The agreed recommendations and actions are implemented. Regular reporting on the recovery actions are reported to management. This stage is concluded once the recovery milestones have been achieved.

Handover and Closure : The programme and project documentation is formally handed over to the client programme or project management staff. The assignment is formally closed.
